The Nurse Practitioner (NP) role within the Division of Cardiology at Connecticut Children's Medical Center incorporates the roles and accountabilities of an advanced practitioner providing both ambulatory and acute care services to cardiology patients, independently and in consultation with the pediatric cardiologists. The NP works with cardiologists, pediatric intensivists, other sub-specialists, inpatient and ambulatory nursing staff, and related clinical and clinical support positions. The Division of Cardiology at Connecticut Children's Medical Center is accountable for delivering comprehensive quality care, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, according to standards of practice including neonates and cardiology patients from birth through adulthood. The practitioner functions as a member of the pediatric cardiology team, within an integrated academic model. ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES High quality Clinical Care and teamwork within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology including: * Supervising and coordinating the day-to-day care of ambulatory and inpatient patients. * Facilitating teamwork and cooperation among staff, effectively following-up and resolving routine clinical issues, seeking support from the supervising physician director when appropriate. * Participating in the performance improvement process and on-going educational activities in the Division. * Attending and where appropriate participating in weekly divisional clinical review and planning meetings * Representing the AP perspective at meetings with administrators, supervisors, colleagues and community pediatricians * Effectively communicating with members of the Cardiology Division and the wider multidisciplinary care team. * Participation in ambulatory clinic sessions, typically weekly, under the direct supervision of a cardiologist physician. * Participation in daily rounds on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and adult and pediatric cardiac inpatient floors * Treatment and evaluation of patients with neonatal, childhood, and adult cardiac illness, promoting the health of the child and family. Providing preventive health care screening and interventions when needed. * Performing histories and physical examinations and consultations, obtaining and interpreting diagnostic laboratory and imaging test results on cardiology patients. * Performing procedures including peripheral IV placement, blood draws, arterial draws. * Coordination of patient care with team members, other staff, community agencies and PCPs. * Consulting with attending physicians to discuss patient care and monitor outcomes when indicated. * Checking of pending discharge labs/tests with notification of cardiology providers and or community pediatricians with results * Participation in teaching and learning in an integrated academic model. * Documentation of care in the medical record in a clear, accurate, and timely manner. * Practice preventive health care through patient and family education and child health advocacy. * Participate in peer review. * Participate in special programs and services as assigned. * Maintenance of professional expertise through involvement in professional organizations and continuing Education programs. Encourage team members to do the same. * Demonstration of knowledge and effective application of the age-related differences and needs of patients from neonate through adolescence and adulthood. * Demonstration of cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients, families, and coworkers. * Demonstrate support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the standards and values of Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Five or more years of job related pediatric experience. Prior acute care and ambulatory experience preferred. Proven commitment to providing the highest quality pediatric healthcare in a family-centered care model. Requires Physician Assistant OR Advanced Practice Register Nurse education and licensure.
